This August, we invite you to…
Come join us In the Kitchen
Help us get started.
As we begin our first “semester” of classes this fall, consider taking a minute to share with us what you’re interested in learning. We’re excited to grow into the shape that our community most needs, while facilitating food and fellowship along the way.
We look forward to creating a space that embraces the warmth and sharing nature of the kitchen environment.
About Us
Local Cooks. Local Chefs. Local Growers. Local Food. In the Kitchen.
Bloomington has a wealth of food knowledge. This is something both of us have learned as we’ve served customers of Goods for Cooks, but you don’t need professional experience to see B-town adores its food-centric local businesses. Townie or visiting student, you can easily recognize the culinary knowledge and talent the Greater Bloomington area has. In the Kitchen has been designed to tap into these skills. We have great chefs, culinary instructors and home cooks who are truly talented. However, even with the extensive food culture, we felt there was a crucial missing piece— a place to share and build the community good food and wine creates. Our hope is that In the Kitchen, both a teaching kitchen and event space, will become an asset to community members looking to gain new culinary skills, meet local cooks, learn about wine, or break bread with friends old and new.
Gather. Learn. Taste. In the Kitchen.
In the Kitchen is an endeavor we’ve taken on with three guiding principles in mind: gather, learn and taste. In that order specifically. The kitchen environment is a great place to gather, and when that happens, you activate a space specifically equipped for learning and tasting. Cooking engages all five senses— sight, touch, hearing, smell, and of course, taste. By challenging and expanding your abilities as a cook, you’re also growing your relationship with your body and mind, which impacts how you relate to other people, styles and perspectives. There’s a reason food makes such a great conversation topic. It’s full of nuance, complexity and individuality, but also deeply engrained in culture and history. We hope that principles and beliefs such as these will flourish in the classes and events at In the Kitchen.
We anticipate this new adventure will grow slowly. We will build on our successes and the desires of our supporters. We are working diligently to bring you an establishment and a space that is multifaceted, yet grounded in the basic principles of good food. We rely on the continual efforts of Goods for Cooks staff, as well as home and professional cooks. We earnestly look forward to creating a space that embraces the warmth and sharing nature of the kitchen environment.
Please consider filling out our survey on the home page and signing up for a class in August!
Sincerely,
Ava and George
FAQs
Sorry, you’re located where?
We don’t have a street-front window, so you might be confused about where we are. The short answer? Right underneath our sister business, Goods for Cooks in the the Uptown Plaza building in downtown Bloomington. The easiest way to access our suite, 014, is to use the alley entrance which is located between JL Waters and The Peach Cobbler Factory. If you enter in the main building doors which face the courthouse, find the stairs and head down. Suite 014, people!
When are you open?
There aren’t any standard hours associated with the business at this time, but August will feature our very first classes. Check out our calendar to see what and when we’re hosting this month.
I think I’d make a great class instructor. Who do I talk to?
The current best way to learn more about leading classes at In the Kitchen is to reach out to the Kitchen Coordinator, Ava Collins, via the contact page located on the website header.
What classes are offered?
Umm, the fun kind? Seriously though, we offer all sorts of classes! As we’re in the baby stages of development, we’re not totally sure what kinds of classes will be held most repeatedly. It depends on the feedback we get. We intend to focus on baking, hosting tips and tricks, wine education, methods for elevating flavor, knife skills and even hands-off classes like culinary history or the impact of eating local.
What’s your cancelation policy?
Life happens. If you can no longer attend class, we’ll do our best to get you rescheduled. Cancelation more than 24 hours in advance qualifies for a refund or gift certificate in the amount spent. Cancelation within 24 hours of class will be eligible for a gift certificate only.
Who’s involved?
Owners George Huntington and Ava Collins. You might even see them at Goods for Cooks sometime, since George co-owns GFC with his sister Samantha Eibling, and Ava is a long-time staff member!
Will you host my private event?
Yes! We anticipate hosting a limited number of private events, including birthday parties, engagement celebrations, bridal showers, private wine tastings, etc. Please see the hosting tab located on the website header.
Can I audit a class?
We’re so glad you’re interested in our classes! However, at this time we aren’t offering an option to audit classes. If you’d like to be present for a class, please sign up on the registration tab. Occasional exceptions to this rule can and will be enforced.
